The ‘Budget’ feature within Google Pay allows for users to compartmentalise and distribute their monthly income into wallets. Wallets let users choose how much money the user would like to allot for certain tasks or activities. The idea that a budgeting app would help households came from a personal need to budget our household income without the expensive journey of hiring a CA. Integrating the feature within Google Pay makes budgeting a more partical and do-able task. The feature aims to fulfill the needs of a household and helps save up for a common goal.

SAMSUNG ALERTS AND NOTIFICATIONS
UX RESEARCH, UX DESIGN, MOTION DESIGN, PROTOTYPING
Notifications are pop-ups or messages generated by applications to alert the user on a new update from ongoing tasks or events. Clear and effective visual and motion design can make alerts and notificatios more expressive and engaging, while minimising cluttler and distraction in the user experience. Motion can also enable new ways to imagine notifications on a smartphone. The project aims to make the alerts and notification experience on Samsung smartphones, less alarming and distracting for the user.

METHODOLOGY
SECONDARY RESEARCH
  • Notifications and the different operating systems

  • Types of notifications

  • Notifications specific to Samsung smartphones

  • Anatomy of a notification

  • Transition patterns

PRIMARY RESEARCH
  • User interaction with different operating systems

  • Interviews

  • Mapping insights to identify key problem areas

  • Use cases

IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL DIRECTIONS
IDEATION
MOTION
  • Animations—decluttering and expansion

  • Prioritising notifications

  • Brainstorming

  • Storyboard

  • Rapid prototyping

  • How might we question

  • UI design

  • Animations

KEY INSIGHTS FROM RESEARCH
  • Users had privacy concerns everytime they recieved a notification

  • New notifications would automatically minimise the already expanded ones

  • Viewing experience was disturbed when a notification would pop while using the phone horizontally

  • Users were unable to dismiss persistent notifications such as system update which caused concerns

SOLUTION

The final design lets the user:

  • Colour code notifications

  • Drag and drop OR swipe to add notifications to priority

KEY LEARNINGS
  • Accessibility and muscle memory were key factors that affected how users would interact with notifications

  • Actions and decisions were influenced by certain behavioural patterns as well as previous experiences

  • Users were quicker to grasp colour coded features and remembered the same without prior experience

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS
  • Minimise decision making for users as they preferred quick actions

  • Make notifications a less distracting and a playful experience

  • Incorporate playful and seamless ways of notifying users as it was acknowledged better

  • Introduce pauses between various screen transitions so as to not overwhelm the user
